BEAT THE DRUM

A commemoration of the Great War in music, story and images

BTD header.jpg

Beat The Drum

Beat The Drum is a commemoration of the Great War - not solemn and gloomy, but respectful of the subject. It tells the story of the war through the eyes of private soldier Michael Heaviside from Craghead. His story acts as our guide through some of the major events and themes of the War. As with all Fool’s Gold shows, the music is live, a mixture of original and very well-known music. The stories of the songs relate to Michael’s experience and to the wider picture and the whole show is underpinned with some fascinating ingress and movies. The show runs at just over one hour. There will be time for a chat, comments and any questions at the end.

The show will be delivered via zoom.

Michael Heaviside

Michael Heaviside was a pitman from Craghead - just down the road from us - and in 1914 he re-enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry and set off for France.

His story is typical of the experience endured by many private soldiers on the Western front, and the show brings these elements to the fore.

His actions at the Battle of Arras in 1917 were as astonishing then as they are moving today.
